Google Pixel 3a (sargo)
Everything you need to know about PixelBuilds for your Google Pixel 3a. Tap here to skip to the necessary step:
Installing PixelBuilds
Warning These instructions only work if you follow every step precisely. Do not continue after something fails! You will be wiping your device, backup files before proceeding.
Prerequisities
  • Latest version of Google's Platform Tools for ADB and Fastboot installed on your PC (read here)
  • Google ADB drivers installed on your computer
  • Have the latest stock firmware installed
Unlocking the bootloader
Warning Unlocking the bootloader will wipe all data on your device. Backup your files before proceeding.
  • In Settings, head to About phone and tap 7 times on the Build number
  • Once finished, you should have Developer Settings unlocked
  • Head to the Developer Settings and enable OEM unlock
Check if your device is recognized on your PC by typing this command:
$ fastboot devices
If everything is correct, you should receive a similar output to this
$ fastboot devices
<serial number>   fastboot
Next, type this following command to unlock the bootloader. Beware, it will wipe all of the data on your device, so if you had not backed up your data yet, do this before following ahead!
$ fastboot flashing unlock
OKAY [ 3.440s]
Finished. Total time: 3.441s
If you see anything on the phone, follow the instructions and your bootloader should be unlocked! Congratulations, you’re one step closer to flashing PixelBuilds!
Installing PixelBuilds recovery
  • Download the latest PixelBuilds boot.img for your device
  • It's safe for you to ignore the dtbo.img file
  • Boot your device to Fastboot Mode (hold volume down + power button) and plug it to your computer
  • Check if your device is recognized on your PC by typing this command:
$ fastboot devices
If everything is correct, you should receive a output similar to this:
$ fastboot devices
<serial number>   fastboot
In the terminal, locate the boot image you downloaded and type the following command:
$ fastboot flash boot boot.img
Congratulations, you’ve successfully flashed PixelBuilds recovery! You may pat yourself on the back. 🥳
Flashing PixelBuilds
  • Download the PixelBuilds build that matches the recovery you installed previously
  • Boot to the Recovery Mode by (hold volume up + power button) and plug your phone to your PC
  • Select Factory Reset, then Format data/factory reset and continue with the formatting process. This will remove encryption and delete all files stored in the internal storage.
  • Return to the main menu
  • On your device, select “Apply Update”, then “Apply from ADB” to begin sideloading
  • On your PC, locate the file location and type this command:
$ adb sideload PixelBuilds.zip
Once finished, tap on the back arrow and reboot to system and you should have installed PixelBuilds on your device successfully, nice!
Updating PixelBuilds
Prerequisities
  • Installed ADB & Fastboot (read here)
  • Google ADB drivers installed on your computer
  • PixelBuilds installed on your device
Updating PixelBuilds using ADB sideload
  • Boot to the recovery mode by (hold power + volume down) and plug your phone to your PC
  • On your device, select “Apply Update”, then “Apply from ADB” to begin sideloading
  • On your PC, locate the new PixelBuilds update and type this command:
$ adb sideload PixelBuilds.zip
Once finished, tap on the back arrow and reboot to system. If all went well, your device will have a newer build of PixelBuilds! Wahoo! 😃
Miscellaneous
Boot modes:
  • Recovery mode: With the device powered off, hold Volume Up + Power. Keep holding both buttons until the you enter the recovery mode menu, then release.
  • Bootloader/Fastboot/Download: With the device powered off, hold Volume Down + Power. Keep holding both buttons until the word “FASTBOOT” appears on the screen, then release.
